AUSTIN (KXAN) — Firefighters have put out a house fire in the Avery Ranch subdivision of northwest Austin. They say the house fire and a north Austin apartment fire were probably started by lightning strikes.

The Austin Fire Department said when they responded to the house fire around 1:45 p.m., they found black smoke coming from the roof of the 2-story home on Brodick Drive, near the intersection of Avery Ranch Boulevard and West Parmer Lane. Crews say the roof of the home collapsed. Neighbors jumped into action when they heard thunder.

“My father-in-law went outside and saw the smoke across the street,” neighbor Gabriel Misura said. “We ran over there to make sure no one was inside, knocked on the door, rang the doorbell, checked the neighbors while my wife was calling 911.” No one was home at the time, and the family who lives there is going to stay with friends.

KXAN’s Jim Spencer says there were three lightning strikes in the area at the time the fire started.

An apartment fire at 9329 Northgate Blvd. has affected 10 apartment units, with damage totaling $150,000, the fire department says.
